Weekend Recap

May 28, 2012

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you know where I’ve been all week/weekend. From Central Park to the White House. My mom and I saw it all! We had a blast. I even spent a good few minutes drooling at Hearst Corporation – my dream job!

After finally visiting my first H&M, missing out on Zara, and exploring the largest Forever21 I’ve ever seen, I jetted back home just in time to spend the weekend with my husband. Now, it’s off to Virginia this week for a little house hunting.

What did you do this weekend?

Summer Hair Trend: The Crown

May 25, 2012

When summer hits, we all feel the need to “wow” everyone. We all feel the pressure to lose those extra pounds we found throughout the winter months. Most importantly though, we all feel the need to just look really, really ridiculously good looking (cue ZL). Let’s take our minds away from the bikini bodies we want and try focusing on something we can actually help in 7 steps: our hair. This summer is going to be a scorching one! With all of the adorable braided details we have in today’s hottest hairstyle trends, we have no other choice but to be transformed into that of a boho beach goddess. Luckily enough for us, owner and lead hairstylist of SalonCapri, Nicholas Penna, Jr. shared with me some of his tips and tricks on how to get this summer’s sexiest and most coveted sensation: The Crown!

Step 1: We’re going to start by curling your hair all over. Clip half of your hair up, so that it is in two seperate sections.

Step 2: Using a 1 ½ inch curling iron, curl all of the hair that is down by working in small sections. Alternate the curling direction between counterclockwise and clockwise. Repeat this step with the top section of hair.  Separate curls with your fingers to achieve a piece-y look, which will compliment the “crown” once it’s completed.

Step 3: Take a ½ inch to 2 inch piece of hair slightly above one ear and pull it across the head to the other side and let the section drape slightly so there will be enough room to pull hair pieces around it. Combine the draped section with a small piece of hair right behind the other ear and pin the joined hair pieces with a bobby pin.

Step 4: Starting at the side of the head where the first hair section was taken from, select another piece of your hair from under the draped section. Lift it upwards, over, and then under the draped section, leaving it to fall underneath.

Step 5: Next, grab another piece of hair from under the draped section a ½ an inch to an inch over and follow the same step. Continue across the head by choosing random pieces and pulling them over and under the draped section until you reach the other side of the head.

Step 6: For the last pinned piece, lift it over and under but let it wrap over the first bobby pin used to secure the draped hair section (to make the bobby pin less visible). Take a second bobby pin and secure the final wrapped piece where the draped section was first secured above one ear.

Step 7: Finish with a light spray of medium hold hairspray. Nicholas Penna Jr. loves Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer.

Feeling like a princess this summer is a simple 7-step process with the help of Nicholas’ tips! Now, acting like a princess, well, that’s up to you.

Pretty in Pink

May 23, 2012

Top: old (similar)

Skirt: Lush (similar)

Shoes: Steve Madden

Bag: Coach

Necklace: DIY c/o MadebyGirl

It comes as no surprise to me that I would unknowingly photograph this all pink ensemble in front of the courthouse. I’m feeling a little Elle Woods-ish. Bummer! Oh well, what can you do?

I have spent the past few months racking my brain over which top I could wear with this skirt and I finally came over this tank in my closet. I absolutely love all three different hues of pink combined together and got the inspiration from this outfit thought up by Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere. It makes me want to go somewhere nice and relax with a yummy glass of wine. Note to hubby: I’m in dior need of a dinner date!

Have you tried the all-pink trend? Or any other color combo?

LC’s Book Looks: Ballerina Bun and Winged Eyeliner

May 21, 2012

My nights have become restless ones filled with lots of Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, and blogging. This is due to the fact that my hubby is gone and well, I just don’t sleep the same by myself. Luckily, 1 AM always brings fun and fresh ideas. I was bored and ran over some photos of Miss Lauren Conrad and decided to do a mock-up of her book cover looks. This was the first time I had ever attempted a sock bun and winged eyeliner. The photos that follow might get a little ridiculous. You have been warned.

To Get the Look:

E.L.F. Liquid Eyeliner

E.L.F. Tinted Moisturizer

E.L.F. Clarifying Pressed Powder

Estee Lauder Eyeshadow Duo “11 Shells”

Covergirl Lipstick “Hot Passion, #305″

Estee Lauder LipGloss “Rose Emotion, #40″

What do you think? If you try it out, I’d love to see your photos! Tweet me @Secretivestyle.

Living Life in the Fast Lane

What I’m Wearing (click to view):

Dress: Forever21 (similar here and here)

Shoes: Target (currently BOGO)

Bag: Thrifted but also DIYed

Jewelry: New York and Company (similar), Taro Collection (gifted)

Lipstick: Elizabeth Arden “Neoclassic Coral #55″

When you’re married to an airline pilot, you learn very quickly how to throw yourself together in thirty minutes or less. While John is gone, we make the most of our visits. He usually doesn’t know his schedule until a few hours before I hop onto a plane. It usually ends up being that he will call and frantically tell me he has a few days off, I will throw the things I think are necessary into a carry-on and jump in my car and head for the airport. I usually don’t have time for primping so I go for minimal makeup and what is fastest for my hair (but still pretty).

Throughout my earlier years, I wasn’t good at being rushed but with time and practice, things get easier and a lot more necessary. I love this dress because it is extremely lightweight and flowy. It has the potential to be dressed up or down, with flats, heels, or sandals. Jewelry or none! My sandals are the new Poeske sandals from Target and are super comfortable and a steal at only $15! Target Style is also giving away a pair, just be sure to watch their Twitter today for the deets!

What’s your favorite quick and easy style?

White Hot Summer

May 16, 2012

 Top: Old Navy (Similar)

Jeans: American Eagle

Shoes: c/o GoJane

Polish on Toes: Sally Hansen “Lacey Lilac”

GoJane sent me these wedges a few weeks ago and I’ve been dying for a reason to wear them! I tucked them into my suitcase during my trip to North Carolina but the weather made me rethink my outfit choices so I decided to dress up just for the hell of it! They’re super comfy, less than $25, and I love the Missoni-esque design on the platform.

My jeans are from American Eagle and have to be, hands down, THE most comfortable pair of skinny jeans I have ever purchased. It’s always so difficult for me to find jeans that fit just right. Either they’re too big in the waist or too small in the legs. When they finally do fit in the waist and legs, they end up being too short. I love that these are offered in short, regular, and tall (which I am wearing!) At $39.50, they’re also not too bad of a price tag either! I bought two pair – dark and light denim.

What would you wear these wedges with?

xoxo, Kait
